CONCORDEMUSIC

BOOK + 2 CDs EDITION
"The Fiddle Music of the Scottish Highlands” - used here as a joint title with Ceol na Fidhle for non Gaelic
speakers and so called because the majority of tunes in these books have been taken from the Highland Bagpipe repertoire.
Many of the pipe marches, reels and jigs included in this collection were composed by pipers attached to the Highland Regiments
in the army but some are much older and date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Famous bagpipe composers such as Donald MacLeod,
George MacLennan, Peter R. MacLeod, Willie Lawrie and many more are represented in these volumes as well as contemporary tunes
by present day pipers, fiddlers and accordionists (Bobby Macleod,Freeland Barbour, Addie Harper etc) who are all producing
tunes in Highland bagpipe style. Fiddlers have always been interested in the bagpipe repertoire but found the notation in
the bagpipe books difficult to read due to lack of key signatures and pipe grace notes which have their own interpretation
when played on the fiddle. This series of books was the first to make available the music of the bagpipes in easily accessable
and readable settings for fiddle. In making the fiddle arrangements of these tunes such eminent pipers as John D. Burgess,
Norman Gillies and Duncan Macgillivray were consulted regarding appropriate grace notes and interpretation of the spirit of
pipe tunes played on the fiddle. The result is an amazing collection of the most popular pipe tunes in good fiddle settings
(this material is also suitable for all melody instruments). Included in the books as well as the bagpipe tunes are ancient
airs for fiddle from early music collections, Gaelic song airs and contemporary material in the same style that has made its
way into the modern Scottish repertoire of the young fiddlers and Scottish bands. This is the music that has been popularised
by such leading bands as Alasdair Fraser’s Skyedance, Capercaillie, Burach, Daimh etc and toured worldwide to represent Scottish
music in all corners of the world. The books contain suggested bowings for fiddlers and chords for guitar or other accompanists
and a great selection of 2/4 Pipe Marches, 6/8 Pipe Marches, Jigs, Reels, Slow airs, Hornpipes, Polkas, Strathspeys etc. There
are more than 160 tunes in the book with most of them not available in fiddle settings in any other publication.
