"Moanin’" was Art Blakey’s first album for Blue Note in several years, after a period of recording for a miscellany of labels, and marked both a homecoming and a fresh start. The first choice had been to have the LP self-titled, but the instant popularity of pianist Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin’”, which was the album’s first track, led to its becoming known by that title. Special Edition with cover and back cover photos by Jean-Pierre Leloir (1931-2010), who captured some of the most iconic images of jazz life in France during the 1950s and the 1960.
